Is Immortality Worth It?
I just started following Blade of The Immortal and good grief, why didn't I read this series earlier when I first heard about it from Wizard Magazine back in the '90s?

I actually wrote about the theme of immortality at http://www.mangatherapy.com/post/9678924119/blade-of-the-immortal-immortality

It's interesting how people still don't think about the consequences of immortality, don't you think?

I'm looking forward to seeing how Samura-san will end this epic tale. I want to see Manji achieve his goal at some point.

I enjoyed your post. Good point about Manji's skills being rusty, especially since he can reattach limbs (less incentive to keep them from getting hacked off). He reminds me of Kai in Lexx in this respect, another "immortal" character who might fit in with your interests.

Hmmm, interesting. I'll have to keep that character in mind!

Also of interest for you could be the TV show Torchwood's 4th season, airing those days. The season, entitled Miracle Day, is actually a study in the purest SF tradition of what happens when one day everyone just stops dying, worldwide. As you can imagine it's not all flowers and sunshine... It's a very interesting take on the subject.

I remember the NY Times article I mentioned in my story mentioned Torchwood. I heard how the series shows how immortality leads to overpopulation of people.

And the collapse of the healthcare system, and various crazy religious sect, and... It's a pretty complex issue, and I find the Torchwood handles it really well (and a twist : the one immortal character of Torchwood become mortal again during the miracle days!)

Nice of them to bring up religion since religion & immortality seem to go hand-in-hand.

You really hit the nail on the head in terms of immortality. If I was immortal, I'd just read books and surf the net all day. Motivation = Gone.

That's why it's so interesting to see a lot of people seeming to obsess over eternal life.
